Original Abstract of the Article

Major Findings

A double-blind study 4 showed that topical application of 5% amlexanox is effective in treating aphthous ulcers. The study compared placebo to 5% amlexanox in 32 patients with recurrent oral aphthous ulcerations. The results showed significant reductions in ulcer size, erythema, and pain in the amlexanox group. No side effects were reported.

In contrast, a randomized placebo-controlled study 2 found that antidepressants such as amitriptyline, reboxetine, and citalopram are associated with apparent anticholinergic-like side effects (dry mouth, constipation, etc.), despite the very low antimuscarinic activity of reboxetine and citalopram in vitro.

Furthermore, 3 found that amitriptyline was associated with significantly higher occurrences of side effects such as dry mouth, dizziness, subjective blood circulation-associated problems, and constipation in healthy adults.
