Major Research Findings

Aspirin is widely prescribed for patients at risk of vascular occlusion. However, the optimal dose of aspirin and how to minimize side effects remain unclear. 2 Additionally, while enteric-coated preparations may reduce gastrointestinal symptoms, their antiplatelet effects have not been fully tested. 2 Moreover, there is exceptionally limited data relating to these issues in women.

Reasons for Side Effects

Aspirin inhibits platelet aggregation, which reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. However, this effect is offset by the potential for aspirin to damage the gastrointestinal lining, causing tinnitus, deafness, and gastrointestinal disturbances. 1 Aspirin can also cause gastrointestinal bleeding.
