Main Research Findings

A study comparing buspirone to diazepam and placebo ( 1 ) indicated that buspirone had fewer sedative-hypnotic side effects and less impairment in psychomotor function than diazepam. This double-blind study involving almost 700 patients found that buspirone (20 mg daily) caused significantly less sedation, lethargy, and depression compared to diazepam (20 mg daily) or clorazepate (24 mg daily). These side effects were comparable to placebo. However, there was no significant difference in other types of side effects between buspirone and the benzodiazepines. Nervousness, headache, and dizziness were experienced more frequently with buspirone than placebo.
