Major research findings

Fenofibrate is an effective lipid-lowering drug with few side effects. 1 A study demonstrated that fenofibrate, when taken at a dose of 400 mg/day, lowered LDL cholesterol by 28% in patients with type IIA + B hyperlipoproteinemia and reduced VLDL-TG by 65% in patients with type IIB + IV hyperlipoproteinemia. 1 Additionally, it was observed that fenofibrate did not affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of repaglinide, a drug used for diabetes. 2

Research also suggests that fenofibrate may play a role in delaying kidney function decline in patients with type 2 diabetes. 4 While an initial increase in plasma creatinine was observed during the first six weeks of fenofibrate treatment, this increase reversed after switching back to placebo. However, the chronic increase in creatinine was slower with fenofibrate than with placebo. 4 Moreover, fenofibrate was shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes patients. 4
