Main research findings

Lumateperone is a new type of antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. 8 , 4 These studies investigated the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of lumateperone and showed positive results in many cases. However, like other antipsychotics, lumateperone also carries the risk of side effects.

Reasons for side effects

Lumateperone works by affecting neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate. 8 These neurotransmitters play key roles in various brain functions such as mood, thinking, and behavior. It is believed that lumateperone improves symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder by adjusting the balance of these neurotransmitters. However, imbalances in these neurotransmitters can lead to side effects.

Common side effects

Weight gain

Lumateperone can cause weight gain. 5 , 9 This is believed to be because lumateperone stimulates appetite or changes metabolism. Weight gain can increase the risk of health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.
