Major findings

Olanzapine has been shown to be effective in treating schizophrenia in several studies. 4 , 6 , 8 , 3 , 1 Olanzapine has been shown to be effective in treating positive symptoms, excitement symptoms, negative symptoms, and general psychopathology. 4 Compared to other antipsychotics, olanzapine appears to have less negative effects on cognitive function. 6 Olanzapine may also be effective in treating treatment-resistant schizophrenia. 9 , 5 However, olanzapine can cause side effects such as weight gain and metabolic abnormalities. 12 , 14 , 13 , 15 Olanzapine also tends to cause more anticholinergic side effects compared to other antipsychotics. 5 , 9
