Praziquantel is the only drug recommended by the World Health Organization to treat both urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis. 17 . This drug is widely used to treat various parasitic infections, including schistosomiasis and cysticercosis. 11 . Praziquantel is generally considered safe and effective, but side effects have been reported. 11 , 1 . It is crucial to understand these side effects and to take appropriate precautions when using praziquantel. 11 .

Reason for Side Effects

Side effects of praziquantel may occur due to the drug's mechanism of action and its metabolism in the body. 13 . It works by targeting the cell membranes of parasites, causing calcium influx and paralysis, which leads to their expulsion from the body. 12 . However, praziquantel can also interact with human cell membranes, leading to side effects like nausea, abdominal pain, and headaches. 1 .
