Main Research Findings

Vilazodone is a new type of antidepressant that was approved for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in the U.S. in 2011. 19 24 It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and a 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist that works by increasing the level of serotonin in the brain. 25 14 A number of studies have found that vilazodone is effective in treating depression, and that it is well-tolerated. 25 20 Vilazodone is also associated with fewer sexual side effects compared to other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). 10 27 8 23 14 18 However, more studies are needed to assess its long-term safety and efficacy. 9 5
