Major Findings

Voxelotor is a newly approved drug for treating sickle cell disease (SCD). 3 , 5 Voxelotor works by changing the structure of hemoglobin, preventing the formation of sickle-shaped red blood cells. 5 This is expected to reduce the occurrence of vaso-occlusive crises and other complications associated with SCD. 3 In clinical trials, voxelotor showed improvements such as increased hemoglobin levels and decreased markers of hemolysis. 3 However, challenges such as insurance approval and side effects still exist with the use of voxelotor. 3
