Overview

While highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has significantly reduced complications like opportunistic infections and Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in people with HIV, KS and chronic hepatitis C (CHC) are still considered opportunistic infections caused by other viruses (HHV-8 and HCV, respectively). While KS rates are declining, it remains a serious complication with a high mortality rate. Current treatments for KS need to be evaluated for safety, effectiveness, cost, and quality of life. HIV infection may accelerate liver disease in those with CHC, but HAART does not seem to improve CHC. Until recently, interferon was the only treatment for CHC. However, combining interferon with ribavirin is now more effective for CHC and should be considered for those with both HIV and HCV.
