Overview

Uterine fibroids are common, affecting 25-35% of women over 35. While some fibroids don’t cause symptoms, up to 50% cause severe problems requiring treatment. Surgery is the standard treatment for fibroids, which are stimulated to grow by estrogen. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) can shrink fibroids by reducing estrogen levels, but cannot be used long-term due to side effects. GnRHa can be used before surgery to shrink the fibroids and reduce bleeding.
