A systematic overview of chemotherapy effects in pancreatic cancer.

Overview

This review of 4,028 patients with pancreatic cancer from 28 studies found no clear evidence that chemotherapy improves survival after surgery (adjuvant chemotherapy). For advanced-stage pancreatic cancer, six studies showed that chemotherapy can prolong survival by three to nine months, but the earlier studies did not show a difference. While some chemotherapy regimens have shown slightly better results than others, there is no strong evidence that most patients benefit significantly from palliative chemotherapy. Chemotherapy may offer some short-term symptom relief for 20-35% of patients. Overall, palliative chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer is only recommended for select cases and should be explored further in clinical trials.
