Overview

This study investigated the use of hormone therapy in addition to radiation for locally advanced prostate cancer. Adding hormone therapy before and during radiation improved overall survival for patients with lower-risk tumors (Gleason score 2-6), while adding it after radiation improved survival for patients with higher-risk tumors (Gleason score 8-10). Continuous hormone therapy for 3 years after radiation was also found to improve survival regardless of tumor risk. Currently, research is ongoing to determine if hormone therapy is beneficial for localized prostate cancer with high-risk factors.
