Gymnastics and Bone Health: A Tale of Two Disciplines
The world of sports is a diverse desert, with many different disciplines offering unique physical and mental challenges. This study explores the effects of two distinct forms of gymnastics, artistic and rhythmic, on the bone and muscle mass of young girls.
The researchers compared prepubertal girls participating in artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and a control group of non-physically active girls. They found that artistic gymnasts had a delay in pubertal development compared to the other groups. Artistic gymnasts also demonstrated significantly higher lean mass, especially in the extremities, and greater bone mineral density in the upper extremities compared to both rhythmic gymnasts and the control group. While rhythmic gymnasts showed enhanced anaerobic capacity and lower body fat mass, they did not exhibit the same bone health benefits as artistic gymnasts.
