Formulating Radiographically Detectable Gastrointestinal Contrast Agents for MRI
This study investigates the development of radiographically detectable gastrointestinal (GI) contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The authors aimed to determine the minimum amount of barium sulfate additive needed for radiographic visibility and to evaluate its impact on the signal characteristics of the contrast agents. The study tested various barium sulfate preparations in dogs to determine the minimum concentration required for visualization during fluoroscopy and abdominal radiography. The study then assessed the impact of barium sulfate on the signal intensity and relaxivity of different potential GI contrast agents using MRI. The study found that a 6% wt/vol suspension of barium sulfate produced adequate radiopacity without significantly altering the MR signal appearance of most contrast agents. The authors conclude that the addition of barium sulfate to MR contrast agents allows for radiographic monitoring of intestinal filling while maintaining the desired MR signal characteristics.
