Overview

Cefpodoxime proxetil (100 mg every 12 hours) was as effective and safe as penicillin V potassium (250 mg every 6 hours) in treating pharyngitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes. After 10 days of treatment, 97% of patients in each group achieved clinical cure or improvement. While 29 out of 30 cefpodoxime-treated patients and 30 out of 33 penicillin-treated patients had S. pyogenes eradicated from their throat culture, the infection recurred in one patient from each group 20 days after treatment termination. The most common adverse events were nausea and diarrhea, which occurred in 7 cefpodoxime-treated patients and 2 penicillin-treated patients.
