Oral N-acetylcysteine reverses hyperoxia-related cough suppression in guinea pigs.
Author: BartosV, BrozmanovaM, JavorkaM, MasarJ, PlankL, PlevkovaJ, TatarM
Original Abstract of the Article :
Hyperoxia-induced lung injury is well known in animal and human studies. We have previously shown that hyperoxic exposure of guinea pigs is associated with suppression of cough reflex. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of oral N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on hyperoxia-induced oxidative s...See full text at original site

Reversing Cough Suppression in Hyperoxia
Hyperoxia, or an excessive amount of oxygen, can have detrimental effects on the lungs, leading to inflammation and injury. This study investigates the impact of hyperoxia on the cough reflex, an essential protective mechanism for clearing the airways.
The researchers used guinea pigs to examine the effects of hyperoxia on cough. They found that exposure to hyperoxia significantly suppressed the cough reflex, both when induced by chemical stimulation with citric acid aerosol and mechanical stimulation of the airways. The researchers then investigated the effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant, on the cough reflex. They found that pretreatment with NAC significantly reversed the hyperoxia-induced cough suppression, suggesting that oxidative stress plays a role in the suppression of cough.
The Role of Oxidative Stress in Cough Suppression
The study demonstrates the crucial role of oxidative stress in the suppression of cough during hyperoxia.
The Potential for Antioxidant Therapies
The study highlights the potential for antioxidant therapies, such as NAC, in mitigating the adverse effects of hyperoxia on the cough reflex.
Dr.Camel's Conclusion
This study demonstrates the delicate balance between oxygen and health, highlighting the importance of protecting the lungs from oxidative stress. Just as a camel must navigate the harsh desert environment, our lungs must be equipped to cope with the challenges of oxygen exposure. This research offers valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying cough suppression and the potential for antioxidant therapies to protect this vital reflex.
