Overview

Prostate cancer is a common cancer in older men and can be fatal. Most cases are diagnosed early with a PSA blood test and are believed to be confined to the prostate gland. Treatments for early-stage prostate cancer include active surveillance, surgery to remove the prostate, external beam radiation therapy, internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy), and hormone therapy. Because there are few controlled studies, the best treatment is unknown. The PIVOT trial, started in 1994, is comparing surgery to active surveillance in men with early-stage prostate cancer.
