A long-term study of 200 older adults with operable breast cancer, who were randomly assigned to surgery or tamoxifen, showed that all patients eventually died of known causes, with 41.5% dying from breast cancer and 58.5% dying from other causes. While survival curves for both treatment groups were similar, breast cancer deaths continued to occur up to 25 years after treatment. This study highlights that even with successful treatment, there is no guarantee of a cure for breast cancer, although a significant number of patients may achieve a personal cure.
