Overview

This review examines medications used to treat bipolar disorder (BP). Lithium, antipsychotics (first and second generation), valproate, and carbamazepine are effective for acute manic episodes. Quetiapine and a combination of olanzapine and fluoxetine are effective for treating depression in bipolar disorder. Antidepressants should only be used with mood stabilizers, as they can worsen manic symptoms if used alone. Lithium, olanzapine, quetiapine, and aripiprazole are helpful in preventing future episodes. Lamotrigine is effective in preventing depressive episodes, but its use for mania is still being studied. Combination therapy can be effective but can also increase the risk of side effects. More research is needed to develop better treatment guidelines and algorithms for managing bipolar disorder.
