Overview

This study examined the effect of acyclovir on lymphocyte response to herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in patients with frequent genital herpes outbreaks. Patients with frequent outbreaks had lower initial HSV-2-specific lymphocyte proliferation (HSV-2-LP) compared to those with infrequent outbreaks. Both daily suppressive acyclovir (S-ACV) and acyclovir given for five days during outbreaks (PLC/ACV) increased HSV-2-LP, but this increase did not correlate with a change in the frequency of outbreaks. S-ACV effectively reduced outbreaks, while PLC/ACV did not. The findings suggest that low HSV-2-LP may be associated with frequent outbreaks, and while acyclovir treatment can increase HSV-2-LP, this response doesn't predict the effectiveness of treatment in preventing outbreaks.
