Overview

Uterine fibroids are common noncancerous growths in the uterus, affecting about 80% of women by age 50. Half of these women will experience symptoms that negatively impact their quality of life. Hysterectomy (removing the uterus) is the standard treatment, but women who don't want this option have two common alternatives: surgery to remove the fibroids (myomectomy) or a procedure that blocks blood flow to the fibroids (uterine artery embolization, UAE).
