Overview

Combined drug regimens with bile acid sequestrants can maximize cholesterol-lowering effects and minimize side effects in patients with severe hypercholesterolemia. The most effective regimens combine bile acid sequestrants with nicotinic acid, lovastatin, or simvastatin. Combinations with fenofibrate, bezafibrate, or probucol have also been shown to be useful. Low doses of bile acid sequestrants (4-8 g/day cholestyramine or 5-10 g/day colestipol) combined with lovastatin, simvastatin, or probucol are well tolerated, show additive lipid lowering, and are cost-effective.
