Overview

About one-third of people with schizophrenia do not respond well to typical or atypical antipsychotic medications, a condition called treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Clozapine is the only antipsychotic medication consistently effective for this group, but even then, about 30-40% do not see sufficient improvement. While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a proven treatment for schizophrenia when combined with antipsychotics, evidence for its effectiveness in treatment-resistant schizophrenia is limited. Further research is needed to find better treatments for this challenging group.
