Overview

This study examined the impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV7 and PCV13) on the prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes, resistance genotypes, and multilocus sequence types in Japan. After the introduction of PCV13, there was a significant reduction in PCV13 serotypes among children and adults, while nonvaccine serotypes increased. Genotypic penicillin resistance decreased overall, but emerged in some nonvaccine serotypes. The findings suggest the need for a broader-acting vaccine to effectively prevent pneumococcal disease.
