Smokers with opioid use disorder may have worse drug use outcomes after varenicline than nicotine replacement.
Author: MartinRosemarie A, RohsenowDamaris J, TideyJennifer W
Original Abstract of the Article :
Smokers with opioid use disorder (OUD) have little success with smoking cessation, possibly due to interactions between nicotine and opioid receptor systems. Smokers with OUD versus non-opioid substance use disorders (NOUD) have not been compared for response to smoking treatment. Data to make this ...See full text at original site

Opioid Use Disorder: A Complicated Road to Smoking Cessation
Smoking cessation is a challenging endeavor for many individuals, but it can be particularly difficult for smokers with opioid use disorder (OUD). This is because nicotine and opioid receptors interact in complex ways, making it harder to quit smoking.
This study compared the effectiveness of varenicline (VAR), a smoking cessation medication, and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in smokers with OUD versus those with non-opioid substance use disorders (NOUD). The study found that smokers with OUD may have worse drug use outcomes after varenicline than nicotine replacement.
Tailoring Treatment for Complex Needs
This study suggests that smokers with OUD may require a different approach to smoking cessation than those with NOUD. Personalized treatment plans that consider the unique challenges of OUD may be necessary to improve the success rate of smoking cessation.
Dr. Camel's Conclusion
Imagine a desert traveler trying to find their way through a vast, unfamiliar landscape. The path is fraught with obstacles, and each traveler requires a unique set of skills and tools to navigate the terrain. Similarly, smokers with OUD face a complex journey when attempting to quit smoking. This study emphasizes the need for tailored interventions to support their success.
