Overview

Methadone and buprenorphine, opioid agonist therapies, were found to be associated with significantly reduced mortality rates, particularly during the first four weeks of treatment, compared to periods out of treatment. The greatest mortality reduction was observed with methadone. However, mortality estimates were heterogeneous and varied by country, region, and treatment provider.
