[Obstetrical analgesia with tramadol--results of a prospective randomized comparative study with pethidine].
Author: EgarterC, HussleinP, KubistaE
Original Abstract of the Article :
Morphine derivatives are the most frequently used analgetic substances in obstetrics today. Nevertheless, nausea, vomiting, weariness, and somnolence are common side effects of these drugs. Moreover opiates exhibit a depressive effect on ventilatory activity. As many studies have demonstrated tramad...See full text at original site

Obstetrical Analgesia with Tramadol: A Comparative Study with Pethidine
This prospective randomized trial compared the efficacy and safety of 100 mg tramadol and 100 mg pethidine in 40 women requesting pain relief during labor. Both drugs provided analgesia, with similar duration of action, but tramadol exhibited fewer side effects, particularly weariness and somnolence. The newborn babies in the tramadol group tended to have higher ventilatory frequency. Serum levels of tramadol in umbilical and maternal veins demonstrated a mean quotient of 0.83 +/- 0.15. The results suggest that tramadol may provide analgesia comparable to pethidine, but with fewer side effects.
Tramadol: A Potential Oasis for Labor Pain?
This study highlights the potential of tramadol as a safer alternative to pethidine for pain relief during labor. The study's findings suggest that tramadol provides comparable analgesia with fewer side effects, offering a potentially more comfortable experience for mothers and their newborns.
Navigating the Desert of Labor Pain
Labor pain can feel like a relentless desert storm. This research explores the potential of tramadol as a smoother path through this challenging terrain. While more research is needed to fully assess its benefits, the study's findings offer a glimmer of hope for a more comfortable experience during childbirth.
Dr.Camel's Conclusion
This study provides promising evidence for the use of tramadol as an effective and safe analgesic for labor pain. While further research is needed to fully explore its benefits and long-term effects, the study's findings suggest that tramadol could offer a more comfortable and less disruptive experience for mothers and their newborns.
