Overview

This article updates radiotherapy (RT) guidelines for breast cancer, based on new scientific evidence. RT after breast-conserving surgery (BCS) reduces the risk of local recurrence (LR) by 50-60%. RT is also standard treatment following BCS for early-stage invasive breast cancer. Hypofractionated whole breast irradiation (WBI) and accelerated partial breast irradiation are validated alternatives to conventional WBI. RT after mastectomy reduces LR risk and improves survival.
