Second-Generation Antipsychotics: A Comparative Analysis in the Treatment of Schizophrenia
The treatment of [Schizophrenia] is a complex and evolving field, with numerous medications available. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the comparative evidence for [Second-Generation Antipsychotics (SGAs)] in treating schizophrenia, comparing them to each other and to [First-Generation Antipsychotics (FGAs)]. By systematically reviewing recent high-quality systematic reviews and primary studies, researchers analyzed data from a total of 162 trials involving SGAs and 116 trials comparing SGAs to FGAs. Their findings suggest that most SGAs, particularly older ones, had similar effects on functional outcomes, quality of life, mortality, and adverse event incidence. However, some SGAs, such as clozapine, olanzapine, and risperidone, demonstrated superior efficacy in symptom reduction.
