Overview

Vaccination is the most cost-effective way to prevent and even eliminate infectious diseases. However, some people experience rare but serious side effects from vaccines, such as immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The MMR vaccine is the only vaccine linked to ITP, affecting about 0.087 to 4 out of every 100,000 people who get the vaccine. COVID-19 vaccines can also cause ITP, affecting about 0.8 to 11.3 out of every million people who get vaccinated. People who have had chronic ITP are more likely to experience ITP after getting the COVID-19 vaccine, especially those who have had their spleen removed or take more than 5 medications. Glucocorticoids and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) are the main treatments for vaccine-associated ITP.
