The Importance of TORCH Profile in Hearing Impaired Children
In the field of pediatric audiology, diagnosing the root cause of hearing loss is crucial for effective intervention. This study focuses on the TORCH group of infections, a common culprit behind bilateral profound hearing loss, especially in developing countries like India. The authors investigated the seroprevalence of TORCH infections in children who were prospective candidates for cochlear implants at AIIMS, Patna, a tertiary care center in eastern India. They employed a retrospective study design, analyzing data from 2017 to 2018 on 50 children diagnosed with bilateral profound hearing loss. Blood samples were collected and analyzed using ELISA for detecting antibodies against Toxoplasma, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) (TORCH). The study found that all patients tested negative for IgM, indicating no recent infection. However, the IgG seroprevalence was significant, with 16.3% for Toxoplasma, 74.4% for Rubella, 69.8% for CMV, and 20.9% for HSV. This finding underscores the prevalence of TORCH infections in India and their potential impact on hearing development. All children exhibited bilateral severe to profound hearing loss based on ABR results and bilateral REFER (refer to equipment) on OAE, highlighting the severity of their hearing impairment.
