Overview

In a study of 96 people with heroin addiction, those who were offered heroin maintenance continued to use heroin regularly, supplementing their prescription from other sources. They remained moderately involved in the drug subculture and criminal activities. Those offered oral methadone had a higher abstinence rate but also a greater dependence on illegal drugs. They were more likely to be arrested during the year-long follow-up. There was no significant difference in employment, health, or non-opiate drug use between the two groups. Refusal to prescribe heroin led to a significantly higher dropout rate from treatment.
