Overview

This study investigated the effectiveness of two doses (3 MU and 6 MU) of interferon in treating 60 patients with chronic hepatitis C. About half of the patients (53.3%) experienced normalization of liver enzymes after 6 months of treatment, with no significant difference between the two doses. However, over half of those who initially responded (56.2%) experienced a relapse within 3 months after treatment ended. While the higher dose did not improve response rates, it did lead to more side effects and non-compliance, leading to treatment discontinuation in 10% of patients. Liver histology improved in about 25% of patients, and viral RNA became undetectable in most responders, suggesting that interferon can improve liver function and reduce viral load, despite a high relapse rate.
