Overview

A study of breast cancer patients in Heidelberg found that two-thirds received breast-preserving therapy (BCT), with pre-operative chemotherapy increasing the number of patients eligible for this treatment. BCT involved wide surgical margins and high-dose radiation. A prospective study showed a 10% higher five- to ten-year survival rate for BCT compared to mastectomy. Local recurrence occurred in 4-6% of BCT cases, compared to 9% after mastectomy without radiation. Local recurrence did not affect survival rates. However, distant metastases were significantly higher in patients who did not receive radiation after breast-conserving surgery. Therefore, radiation is generally recommended after BCT. The majority of women (98%) indicated a preference for BCT over mastectomy two years after treatment.
