A study of 30 patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with interferon (IFN) found that while IFN can improve liver function and decrease anti-HCV antibodies, this doesn't always mean the virus has been eradicated. 11 out of 11 patients who completely responded to treatment (CR) had undetectable HCV-RNA for at least 24 months. However, in patients who partially responded (PR), transiently responded (TR), or did not respond (NR), HCV-RNA persisted in some cases. Sustained disappearance of HCV-RNA was only seen in patients who did not experience a relapse in liver function. This suggests that IFN can eliminate HCV from the bloodstream in some patients, leading to clinical remission of chronic hepatitis C.
