Overview

Shingles, caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, can cause significant pain and lead to a long-term complication called postherpetic neuralgia, which affects 3.4 people per 1,000 each year. Genital herpes, caused by a different type of herpes virus, can cause recurrent outbreaks multiple times per year for some people. Antiviral medications like famciclovir, valacyclovir, and acyclovir can reduce the severity and duration of these conditions, and may even prevent future outbreaks of genital herpes.
