Major Research Findings

Abatacept is an immunosuppressant drug used to treat autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, and Crohn's disease. It works by inhibiting T cell activation, thus reducing the inflammatory response. Abatacept is administered by subcutaneous or intravenous injection. Numerous clinical trials have been conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of abatacept. These studies have shown that abatacept can improve symptoms of various autoimmune diseases and slow disease progression. 13 , 2 , 6 , 1 , 19 , 21 , 22 , 4 Abatacept has been reported to be effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis, reducing symptoms such as swelling, pain, and joint stiffness, and slowing disease progression. Abatacept has also been shown to be effective in treating osteoporosis. Abatacept has been reported to inhibit bone destruction and increase bone density. 8 Abatacept has been shown to be effective in treating high blood pressure in pregnant women. Abatacept has been reported to improve blood flow to the placenta and reduce the symptoms of high blood pressure. 16 Abatacept has been shown to be effective in treating Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Abatacept has been reported to promote muscle regeneration and improve muscle weakness. 11 Abatacept has been reported to suppress lung inflammation and improve lung function. 12 Abatacept has been reported to improve nerve function. 10

Subcutaneous abatacept (ABA) is a safe and effective long-term treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who have not responded adequately to methotrexate (MTX). In a 5-year study, 68.8% of patients completed treatment with SC ABA (125 mg/wk) and the incidence rates of serious adverse events, infections, serious infections, malignancies, and autoimmune disorders were stable over time. No association was found between immunogenicity and either worsening of ABA safety or loss of efficacy. Efficacy in the long-term extension was consistent with the double-blind period and was maintained to the end of the study.
