Major Research Findings

Several studies have shown that the combination of amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide is effective in treating hypertension. 5 , 6 , 4 These studies have demonstrated that the combination of amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide effectively lowers blood pressure compared to monotherapy. Furthermore, these studies show that the side effects of this combination are generally mild. 5 , 6 , 4

Reasons for Side Effects

Side effects of the combination of amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide are primarily thought to be caused by hydrochlorothiazide's increased potassium excretion. 7 , 6 Hydrochlorothiazide inhibits potassium reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to a decrease in potassium levels in the body. Potassium is essential for the normal functioning of muscles and the heart, so potassium deficiency can lead to side effects such as muscle weakness, heart arrhythmias, and other problems.
