Original Abstract of the Article

Major research findings

Bempedoic acid is a promising new cholesterol-lowering drug that has been shown to be effective in reducing cholesterol levels and is relatively free from the many side effects encountered with the use of other hyperlipidemic drugs such as statins. 1 , , 20

Reasons for side effects

Bempedoic acid is a prodrug, meaning it is converted to the active agent only in the liver, not in skeletal muscle, and this may prevent any myotoxic activity. 20 , 22

Common side effects

Hyperuricemia

Some studies have reported hyperuricemia as a side effect of bempedoic acid. 6 , 10

Measures against side effects

Hyperuricemia

Hyperuricemia can be managed by measuring uric acid levels before administering bempedoic acid and monitoring uric acid levels regularly during administration. 6

Comparison between studies

Common points of research

Many studies have confirmed that bempedoic acid has a cholesterol-lowering effect. Also, it has been reported that bempedoic acid has fewer side effects such as muscle pain compared to statins. 1 , , 20 , 8 , 19 , 7 , 9 , 3 , 4 , 2 , 15 , 17 , 5 , 16 , 10 , 12 , 14 , 22 , 21 , 13 , 11

Differences in research

Different results have been obtained in the effectiveness and side effects of bempedoic acid depending on the research. For example, some studies report hyperuricemia as a side effect of bempedoic acid, while others do not. 6 , 10

Precautions for application in real life

Bempedoic acid may be a viable option for patients who are unresponsive to statins or concerned about statin side effects. However, bempedoic acid is a new drug and there is not yet sufficient data on its long-term safety and efficacy. Therefore, it is important to consult with your doctor before taking bempedoic acid to confirm that it is appropriate for your body. 1 , , 20

Current limitations of research

There is not yet enough research on bempedoic acid. In particular, further research is needed on its long-term safety and efficacy. It is also important to investigate the interaction between bempedoic acid and other drugs. Additionally, research is needed to clarify for which patients bempedoic acid is effective. 16

Future research directions

Research is needed to assess the long-term safety and efficacy of bempedoic acid. Research is also important to investigate interactions between bempedoic acid and other drugs. Further, research is needed to clarify which patients will benefit from bempedoic acid. 5 , 16

Conclusion

Bempedoic acid may be a viable option for patients who are unresponsive to statins or concerned about statin side effects. However, bempedoic acid is a new drug and there is not yet sufficient data on its long-term safety and efficacy. Therefore, it is important to consult with your doctor before taking bempedoic acid to confirm that it is appropriate for your body. It is hoped that research on bempedoic acid will progress in the future and its safety and effectiveness will be clarified. 1 , , 20
