Original Abstract of the Article

Main Research Findings

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been shown to have effective effects in treating a variety of diseases, including menopausal syndrome ( 5 ), peptic ulcers ( 4 ), diabetic nephropathy ( 15 ), pulmonary inflammation with AIDS ( 10 ), advanced cancer ( 3 ), recurrent parotitis in children ( 9 ), bronchial asthma ( 7 ), insomnia ( 20 ), COVID-19 ( 21 ), cerebral palsy ( 8 ), atrial fibrillation ( 18 ), rheumatoid arthritis ( 23 ), heroin addiction ( 6 ), cancer patients ( 11 ), coronary heart disease ( 19 ), breast cancer ( 16 ), arrhythmia ( 22 ), schizophrenia ( 1 ), fundus diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases (), cytomegalovirus ( 2 ), and more.

Many studies have reported that TCM is a safe and effective treatment option with fewer side effects compared to Western medicine. For example, in the treatment of menopausal syndrome, the combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine has been recognized as an effective therapy for improving symptoms ( 5 ). In the treatment of peptic ulcers, combination therapy with TCM and Western medicine has shown improved therapeutic effects compared to Western medicine alone ( 4 ).

TCM is known to have a wide range of effects, including strengthening the immune system, suppressing inflammation, improving blood circulation, and regulating nerve function. These effects are expected to improve symptoms of various diseases and enhance patients' QOL (quality of life).

Benefits and Risks

Benefit Summary

Many studies have reported that TCM is a safe and effective treatment option with fewer side effects compared to Western medicine. TCM is known to have a wide range of effects, including strengthening the immune system, suppressing inflammation, improving blood circulation, and regulating nerve function. These effects are expected to improve symptoms of various diseases and enhance patients' QOL (quality of life).

Risk Summary

There are potential risks associated with the use of TCM. For instance, some TCM ingredients may trigger allergic reactions. Additionally, TCM may interact with Western medical treatments, so it is crucial to consult with a doctor before using TCM.

Comparison of Studies

Commonalities among Studies

Numerous studies have demonstrated that TCM shows effective results in treating various diseases. Additionally, reports indicate that TCM is a safer treatment option with fewer side effects compared to Western medicine.

Differences among Studies

Studies have yielded varying results regarding the effectiveness and safety of TCM. This disparity can be attributed to differences in research design, target patient populations, and types of TCM used.

Consistency and Contradictions in Results

Research findings on the effectiveness and safety of TCM lack consistency. This inconsistency can be attributed to variations in research design, target patient populations, and types of TCM used. Therefore, further research is necessary to more clearly assess the effectiveness and safety of TCM.

Cautions for Real-Life Applications

It's crucial to consult with a doctor before using TCM, as it may interact with Western medical treatments. Additionally, exercise caution as TCM may contain ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions.

Limitations of Current Research

Research on the effectiveness and safety of TCM is still not comprehensive. Particularly, research on the mechanisms of action and long-term effects of TCM is lacking. Therefore, further research is needed to more clearly assess the effectiveness and safety of TCM.

Future Research Directions

To more clearly assess the effectiveness and safety of TCM, the following research is required:

  • Research on the mechanisms of action of TCM
  • Research on the long-term effects of TCM
  • Research on the interactions between TCM and Western medicine
  • Research on quality control of TCM

Conclusion

TCM may exhibit effective effects in treating various diseases. However, research on the effectiveness and safety of TCM is still not comprehensive. Therefore, it is crucial to consult with a doctor before using TCM. Further research is needed to more clearly assess the effectiveness and safety of TCM.
