Palifermin has been shown to be effective in reducing severe oral mucositis in patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for head and neck cancer. 2 , 3 This drug has been approved for the prevention of oral mucositis and works by promoting the regeneration of the oral mucosa and suppressing inflammation. 6 Palifermin has also been shown to be effective in preventing oral mucositis in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. 5
