Major Research Findings

Safinamide is a new type of medication used to treat Parkinson's disease. It works in two different ways: by blocking an enzyme called monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) and by adjusting the balance of a neurotransmitter called glutamate. 4 , 6 . These actions can help improve both the movement and non-movement symptoms of Parkinson's disease. 4 , 6 . Safinamide has also shown promise in reducing the severity of movement fluctuations and dyskinesia, which are common side effects of another Parkinson's medication called levodopa. 4 , 6 , 9 , 10 . It may also reduce the amount of levodopa needed. 9 .

Reasons for Side Effects

Side effects of safinamide are thought to occur because the drug affects the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain.
