Main Research Findings

Tocilizumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that binds to the interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor and blocks its activity. Several studies have shown that tocilizumab is effective in treating various inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and Kawasaki disease. 3 , 5 , 6

3 found that tocilizumab may be effective in treating discogenic low back pain, one of the causes of low back pain. In this study, patients who received an injection of tocilizumab into the intervertebral disc experienced greater pain relief than those who received a placebo injection.

On the other hand, 4 showed that tocilizumab is effective in suppressing corneal neovascularization induced by alkali burns. In this study, rats that received subconjunctival injections of tocilizumab had lower corneal neovascularization than rats that received a placebo.
