Amantadine: A Double-Blind Study of Side Effects for Influenza A Prophylaxis

Amantadine, an antiviral drug, has been used for influenza A virus prophylaxis. However, its potential side effects are a concern. This research investigates the side effects associated with amantadine administration during a study of its efficacy in young adults. The study involved 88 students who received either amantadine or placebo in a double-blind crossover design.

Side Effects of Amantadine

The findings revealed that side effects, such as dizziness, nervousness, and insomnia, were significantly more frequent in those receiving amantadine compared to placebo. Although most subjects tolerated the side effects, six discontinued amantadine due to severe discomfort. Furthermore, 16 students receiving amantadine showed decreased performance on sustained attention tasks compared to those receiving placebo.

Considerations for Amantadine Prophylaxis

This research highlights the importance of considering the potential side effects of amantadine, especially in the context of mass prophylaxis. It's like finding a hidden desert oasis that has a few prickly cacti scattered around, reminding us that even beneficial resources can have drawbacks.

Dr.Camel's Conclusion

This study is a reminder that even in the vast desert of medical research, we must always be aware of the potential side effects of medications. It's like finding a beautiful oasis, but then realizing that it's also home to a few scorpions – a cautionary tale that reminds us to proceed with care.
