Overview

The study explored the additional pharmacological activities of antihistamines beyond histamine blockage in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. In vitro studies demonstrated that high concentrations of second-generation antihistamines can block inflammatory mediator release and reduce ICAM-1 expression. In vivo studies showed a reduction in nasal symptoms and inflammatory cell influx with both oral and intranasal antihistamines. Clinical trials suggest that topical levocabastine and azelastine may be more effective than oral terfenadine in relieving ocular itch and nasal symptoms.
