Original Abstract of the Article

Major Research Findings

Albuterol inhaler is a commonly used medication for asthma, and many studies have confirmed its bronchodilator effects. 29 compared the effects of albuterol's racemic mixture (RS-albuterol) with its active form, R-albuterol, and found that both showed comparable effects on bronchodilation, heart rate increase, and decreased potassium levels in blood. The therapeutic ratio was also comparable between the two forms.

9 compared the bronchodilator effects of albuterol and terbutaline and found no significant difference in bronchodilation or side effects. 4 compared albuterol and isoproterenol, another bronchodilator, and found no significant difference in bronchodilation or the speed at which the effect took place. However, isoproterenol is known to have cardiovascular side effects, therefore albuterol is preferred for use in pulmonary function testing.

Furthermore, 21 found that continuous administration of albuterol in patients with severe acute asthma led to significantly greater bronchodilation compared to intermittent administration. It also caused a more pronounced decrease in blood potassium levels. 10 found that high-dose albuterol nebulization in children with severe acute asthma resulted in significantly greater improvement in forced expiratory volume in 1 second, forced vital capacity, and wheeze score compared to low-dose administration, and led to a lower hospitalization rate.
