Major Research Findings

Benznidazole is a drug used to treat Chagas disease, a parasitic infection caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. These research papers provide insights into the effects, side effects, and mechanisms of action of benznidazole against Chagas disease.

Benznidazole is effective in inhibiting the growth of Trypanosoma cruzi. 18 reports that benznidazole combined with parthenolide has synergistic effects against Trypanosoma cruzi, significantly reducing the concentration of benznidazole needed to inhibit 50% of cell growth. Additionally, benznidazole has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins in Trypanosoma cruzi. 4 Benznidazole also reduces the levels of trypanothione, a major glutathione conjugate in Trypanosoma cruzi, and metallothionein, a protein found in Trypanosoma cruzi that may contribute to drug resistance. 5
