Major Research Findings

Cromolyn sodium ophthalmic solution is effective in treating various allergic eye conditions, including vernal keratoconjunctivitis, allergic conjunctivitis, chronic conjunctivitis, and giant papillary conjunctivitis. 5 , 23 , 3 , 6 Cromolyn sodium stabilizes mast cells membranes and prevents the release of histamine and other biochemical mediators, effectively reducing allergy symptoms. 23 Cromolyn sodium is generally safe and has fewer side effects compared to steroid eye drops. 23 , 3 However, some studies suggest that the effectiveness of cromolyn sodium may not be significantly better than placebo in certain cases. 15 Additionally, individuals without allergies might respond less effectively to cromolyn sodium compared to those with allergies. 5

Reasons for Side Effects

Cromolyn sodium ophthalmic solution works by stabilizing mast cell membranes, preventing the release of histamine and other substances involved in allergic reactions. However, the solution itself can be irritating to the eyes, causing side effects.

Common Side Effects

Eye irritation

The most common side effect of cromolyn sodium ophthalmic solution is eye irritation.
