Major Research Findings

Cyproheptadine, a serotonin receptor antagonist, has been shown to have a variety of effects in numerous studies. It has been shown to inhibit serotonin's action. 15 Additionally, it has calcium channel blocking effects, reducing the calcium influx in the heart. 11 Due to these actions, cyproheptadine has demonstrated various effects, including improvement of appetite loss, antihistamine effects, anti-anxiety effects, antidepressant effects, anti-inflammatory effects, and anticancer effects.

Cyproheptadine has been reported to be effective in improving appetite loss. 2 By inhibiting serotonin and histamine, cyproheptadine is expected to improve allergic symptoms and suppress airway inflammation. 8 Furthermore, cyproheptadine is expected to suppress cancer growth. 7

On the other hand, cyproheptadine has also been reported to have side effects. Side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, and weight gain. 2 Additionally, cyproheptadine should be avoided during pregnancy. 4
